Girl Fox Christmas Jamboree – Recap & Photo Gallery

The Basement in Columbus, Ohio, hosted their Second Annual Christmas Jamboree featuring some awesome local bands. The Bascinets, Saving Escape and Girl Fox took over this local venue in Columbus to spread their holiday cheer and love of rock and roll. The Basement is well known in Columbus and has had some amazing acts come through their doors. Last night was all about giving local Ohio bands their chance to shine.

The Bascinets kicked off the night, taking the stage at 8 pm. Their 45-minute set was a well-established tribute to indie rock; think Whitney meets The Front Bottoms. Band members Tristan Huygen, Trevor Joellenbeck, Nick Shew, and Nick Wellman have managed to create a sound that is familiar yet unique. It has a poppy sound but covered with a blanket of punk-rock vibes.

The next band, Saving Escape, must have taken a time machine from 1971 to play at The Basement. These kids can’t be older than 18, but don’t let their age fool you; they can rock. These old souls brought the best of classic rock back to life on the stage. Howling vocals, surprising guitar solos, and funky bass lines helped get the crowd dancing and ready to party like it’s 1969. Their sweeping rendition of “Whole Lotta Love” was nothing short of breathtaking and a highlight of the night.

Girl Fox reminds me of Car Seat Headrest if Lou Reed was a member of the band: grungy indie rock with just the right amount of reverb. Each member of Girl Fox brings a unique sound and presence to the stage. Their set was a healthy mix of Christmas covers, beer breaks, and original songs. Their lyrics are quite different than the holiday cheer that most Christmas songs focus on. Intimate tracks about depression, trying to fit in, and dealing with internal demons take you on a personal journey through the life of lead singer Ryder Dalavern.
