All I Want for Christmas is Some Leftöver Crack
I wasn’t the most extroverted kid in high school. I ended up being taken under the wing of various upperclassman outcasts, like the only two punks my school had at the time, both of whom were named Vince. I would be so out of my mind on whatever I couldn’t even tell you who I saw, but I would often go to Jannus Landing and be the iconic nondescript laconic punk with the crossed arms standing motionless in the pit. Honest-to-goodness punk shows are hard to find these days, primarily due to the fact that the genre tends to patronize more DIY venues and has such poor visibility aside from stadium pop punk performers, but for the diligent acolyte they can be found.
Leftöver Crack is touring with Negative Approach this fall/winter, now through January 1st for their Winter of Discontent tour, and we here at MFN will be catching them as they pass through Tampa’s Ybor City on December 9th at The Orpheum. The band was formed by Stza of Choking Victim in 1998 so that they could perform the “leftover” songs that didn’t make it onto the Choking Victim setlist. To match their brilliantly underwhelming dysphemism of a band name and socially conscious yet irreverent lyrics, the group has been banned from venues and stores throughout the U.S. and abroad due to prior criminal records and classic vein of anti-authoritarian (read: libertarian in the proper sense of the term) leftist rage and rudeness.
The current trope of anti-PC rhetoric today seems to apply only to conservative prejudice, for when left-wing bands like Leftöver Crack parry with songs like “Gay Rude Boys Unite” or “One Dead Cop,” the authorities bandy together with their corporate censorship camouflaged as the only paternalism seemingly allowed – moral gatekeeping. So please, if you’ve ever even been curious or romanticized about the clichéd second British invasion, here is your chance for an insuperable (in the most literal sense possible) experience that cannot be bought or bartered.
