The Return of Dead Prez to Fubar in St. Petersburg
Strange Media has advised us to show up early to this event, for the venue WILL fill up fast. Along with Beach Lion, The Hoy Polloy, Legacy Got Bars, John G., LAMEBOT, Madsavvy, and two DJs spinning all night long, Dead Prez will be bringing their socially conscious militant rhythms to St. Petersburg’s Fubar this October 19th. Channelling the DIY hip hop roots of resistance and solidarity paired up with some “futuristic glitch bass” and alternative indie progressive, this lineup is going to bring a night of hard-hitting beats and inspiring rhymes to raise a fist up to for the irrepressible.
Not a duo to mince words, M-1 and stic.man have been collaborating on this project since the mid-’90s and have used their platform to speak power to the oppressed while eschewing the exploitative themes of more main-stream hip hop acts in favor of a testimonial-bleeding call back to the Public Enemy and KRS-One days of New York rap along with other contemporaries like The Coup and Black Star. Drawing parallels between the patriarchal exploitation by the hegemonic militarized police state against minority communities with the self-immolating tendencies of subcultures born out of the conditions for survival, Dead Prez are “revolutionary but gangsta” through and through, offering comrades a release valve that strikes back hard against their oppressors. From their early hit “Hip Hop” from their debut album Let’s Get Free to their latest collaboration Soldier 2 Soldier with Outlawz, Dead Prez have been providing the resistance the words needed to bring disparate communities together and speak truth to power.
