Cults Indoctrinate New Followers with Offering
Looking for dreamy melodies with catchy hooks and pleasant listening? You’ll love what Cults is offering with their new record Offering.
Cults, formed in Manhattan, consists of singer Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, who plays guitar and percussion and sings. The band has not put out an album in four years.
With this recording, the duo has made an album that would fit right at home in Twin Peak’s Roadhouse. Follin’s vocals from the outset are put to the forefront of the mix but are unclear, like… like a dream! Jokes aside, the band has created a wonderful atmosphere that allows one song to flow naturally into the next.
This does, however, give a majority of the record a bit of a monotonous feel. The sound is so pleasing, though, that it doesn’t register as complaint. The track “I Took Your Picture” is built around an off-kilter hook which snaps you out of the daydreamy vibe.
The record hits its stride with the last three songs, “Talk in Circles,” “Clear from Far Away,” and “Gilded Lily.” The first of these provides the album with its strongest chorus and feels like it’s going in circles… (I’m sorry). “Clear from Far Away” grounds itself with a solid guitar track while they enhance the song with weird synth sounds.
“Gilled Lily” brings the album the record to a close with some needed intensity. Thought the record is a pleasant experience to listen to, it could have used more tracks like “Lily” to break the tempos. Then again, I can’t fault the band for using a less-is-more philosophy with the dynamic. (I just wanted more intensity please!!!)
Overall this is a satisfying record. The layered vocals and synths make revisits a worthy endeavor.
