Top Class Picks For MAYFest 2017
MAYFest is just around the corner, and, looking at all of the amazing classes and workshops offered, it can be a little overwhelming to know where to begin planning for the weekend. Below we’ve rounded up a few of the classes we definitely think you shouldn’t miss. The festival has teamed up with top instructors and artists to create unique classes and workshops you won’t be able to find anywhere else. You can check out the full schedule and begin signing up for classes through the festival’s website.
Our top pick for Friday is Tuning the Senses w/ Live Music from Jesse of Breakneck Boys from 3:30-5:00 in Moose Hall, where you’ll join Olgu Merandy as she leads you through an invigorating movement sequence that links the rhythm of breath and movement to the uplifting energy of music. This class combines the modalities of asana and pilates and will focus on creating an explorative and mindful practice. Jesse Merandy of the Breakneck Boys will play live music during the class as you flow.
There’s a huge offering of activities on Saturday, but we’d highly suggest participating in Sunset Point: An Intermediate Hike, which begins at 10:00 am, where you’ll join Cold Spring natives on a hike to Sunset Point. Get back into nature and treat yourself to a panoramic view of a breathtaking stretch of the Hudson Valley. The hike will last approximately three hours and is moderate to difficult level. If hiking isn’t your thing, start your day with Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff! With Marti Nikko & Dj Drez in the Gymnasium at 11:00, where you’ll practice asana and participate in meaningful discussion, all while surrounded by music from DJ Drez. Later in the day, Fitness & Flow by Bring the Hoopla! at 3:00 on Shakti Lawn is the class to attend. This energized class is designed for letting loose, finding your flow and burning up to 500 calories in an hour. No hooping experience is needed, and Hoopla Hoops will be provided.
Sunday your first stop should be SUP Yoga 2: ARM BALANCE at 11:00 AM at the waterfront, which is the only SUP class with open spaces left. The idea behind this class is taking the fear out of falling, trying a new posture and challenging your body in different ways. The class will begin with a lovely warm-up flow to help develop the strength, balance, mind focus, and muscle memory needed for more challenging postures, including crow, side plank, scissors, and headstand (yes, headstand!). Next on our recommendation list for Sunday is A Very Jerry (Garcia) Yoga Jam w/ Acoustically Speaking featuring Mik and Kat of Garcia Project & John Smrtic at 3:00 on Shakti Lawn for a live music Jivamukti Yoga celebration with Acoustically Speaking providing a set of classic Jerry Garcia songs from both The Jerry Garcia Band and Grateful Dead. As you gather in sacred community to uplift our individual and collective vibrations, you will sing, dance and move your bodies with this clear, joyful intent: Through this world of trouble, we’ve got to love one another. Lastly we’ve got Rooted! Skybaby Yoga w/ members of Rusted Root at 5:00 in the Gymnasium, where you’ll join Melia + Kristin of SkyBaby Studio for a strong and steady asana practice accompanied with live music from Rusted Root!
As you can see, MAYfest is full of opportunities to enhance your yoga practice, learn new skills and open your mind to new ideas. The best part is after all the classes are done for the day you get a full night of top-notch music too! These are just some of the class offerings; you can find so many more, including ones geared towards children, advanced practice and more on the full schedule. The festival is taking place May 26-28 at Surprise Lake Camp in Cold Spring, NY. You can still grab tickets through the festival, but why not try your luck and enter our contest to win two weekend passes that include camping?!
