Enjoy the Backwoods Fam Jam Schedule with Seven New Lineup Additions
The schedule for this weekend’s Backwoods Fam Jam is here for all to enjoy. It contains seven fine additions to the previously announced lineup and one significant subtraction. You can find lots more information about that initial lineup here and more about several of the weekend’s performers here.
That subtraction? At the time that Backwoods put this festival together, they attracted more than a dozen outstanding Florida musicians and bands, notably including Flat Land, the outstanding quintet from Gainesville. Since that time, however, Fae Nae and Grant McLeod have been offered an opportunity they could not refuse in California. Flat Land played their farewell show last weekend. We promise to tell you more about their plans as they move to the Left Coast and will keep you informed of their future activities.
Three of the seven additions are from Gainesville, including singer-songwriter Andrew Fagin. Wax Wings gloriously proclaim their genre as “folk/swing/jazz/punk-country,” as if you’re going to miss that! And then you have a “progadelic jamfunk outfit” in the form of Locochino. We doubt those are actual words, but they are actually accurate. These boys rock!
Shapeshifter Mark Etherington from St. Petersburg goes in many directions, including with his great band Redfeather and with Set and Setting. At Backwoods, he will appear as Mountain Holler, performing “music from the city about the beauty of the mind and country.” Custard Pie ventures south from Valdosta with their blend of jam; they will also play the Great Outdoors Jam at the end of September.
ISM is the jazz juggernaut created by Ian McLeod, who fronts the band on vibraphone and synthvibe. This powerful band grows with each appearance, and they have turned heads every time they hit a festival stage.
Finally, there are those boys from Atlanta who just ripped up Sweetwater 420 and Funk Fest 8, Voodoo Visionary. This outstanding quintet (with horn and percussion support on occasion) have been on fire even before they released their first album. Their second, Off the Ground, came out in February, and it smokes. (Read out review here.)
FRIDAY
Custard Pie gets opening honors, so get there early enough to catch their 5:30 set. With two side-by-side stages, music just shifts back and forth, which is great. Black Diamond is up next, followed by The Heather Gillis Band (and did she ever WOW at Wanee!). St. Pete swampers Come Back Alice are on next (and we will have a feature about them before Friday). Then it is Ben Strok’s turn with his revamped band The Full Electric, and Roosevelt Collier hosts the Super Jam.
NEVER MISS A ROOSEVELT COLLIER SHOW, ESPECIALLY A SUPER JAM. Just sayin’…
SATURDAY
You can sleep in for a bit, but get ready for music at 1:30 with Andrew Fagin, ISM, Wax Wings, Universal Green and Hail Cassius Neptune. Locochino takes over next, followed by The Delta Troubadours. Saturday’s lineup concludes with two superb bands: first, The Parker Urban Band, and then Ajeva. That’s pure magic right there.
SUNDAY
Post time is noon Sunday with Mountain Holler, then Fire Water Tent Revival. Next up are Voodoo Visionary and the delicious double-entendres (and single-entendres) of The Applebutter Express, with more rock from Bonnie Blue after those two. Sunday slams shut with Orlando’s excellent The Groove Orient, Isaac Corbitt’s new project Harp Smoke, and finally the Sunshine States “elder” statesmen, The Heavy Pets.
These are three great days of music on May 5-7 at the Lone Palm Ranch in Hastings, between Palatka and St. Augustine, due east of Gainesville.
MusicFestNews will see you there!
