Lotus Rocks The NorVA on New Year’s Eve Run
The jamtronica band Lotus made Norfolk, VA the midpoint of a five night New Year’s Eve run when they played The NorVA on December 29th. Fresh off two shows at Philadelphia’s Electric Factory, the band drew a near full house on a Monday night.
Since the band released a remastered version of their iconic album “Nomad” on December 16th (featuring both studio cuts and a live version from June 2013), you might expect they’d feature some of those tunes. Instead, The NorVA fans were treated to a pair of expertly constructed sets that reached all the way back to their 2002 release, “Vibes”, up to their 2014 self-released EP “Gilded Age”. The first set included “Nematode” and featured two excellent covers: Mord Fustang’s “We Are Now Connected” and The Commodores “Machine Gun”, bookended by “Neon Tubes (Parts 1 and 2)”. The second set included a great mashup of “Intro To A Cell” and “Umbilical Moonset”. To wrap it up, they finished the set with a real fan favorite, “Contagion”, segueing into “Tip of the Tongue”. With their stratospheric compositions and inventive lighting, the band really tapped into the crowd’s energy for an amazing performance. Lotus finished this five night run with two shows at The National in Richmond, VA.
The local psych-rock band Galaxy Dynamite opened the show, along with DJ Spinosa.
