Ghost-Note Announces New Album “Mustard n’ Onions,” Teases First Single “Bad Knees”: LISTEN

Groove innovators Ghost-Note announced an April 19 release date for their upcoming album Mustard n’ Onions, their third full-length record, while simultaneously teasing out the work’s first single “Bad Knees,” a contagious, tour-de-force of funk co-written by the band’s visionary bass player MonoNeon. Mustard n’ Onions will be the group’s first new LP in six years and their debut for Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group.

The album heralds the ensemble’s blossoming maturity as a unit that has spent over a decade carving out out a buzz-worthy niche in funk fusion and beyond. Led by Snarky Puppy’s multi-GRAMMY-winning duo of drummer-keyboardist Robert Sput Searight and percussionist Nate Werth, Ghost-Note consists of a constellation of extraordinary talent including Peter Knudsen (guitar), Sylvester Onyejiaka (baritone sax, tenor sax, flute), Dominique Xavier Taplin (keyboards), Vaughn “V.Keys” Henry (keyboards), Jonathan Mones (alto sax), Mike Jelani Brooks (tenor sax, flute), and bassist Dwayne Thomas (better known as MonoNeon), whose achy joints served as inspiration for “Bad Knees.”

“It’s a funny story. MonoNeon dislocated his knees three or four times dancing to James Brown,” Robert Sput Searight explains of the track’s origins. “When you listen to the song, it’s a knee-jerking groove that makes you wanna dance.”

Also contributing to Mustard n’Onions is a who’s who of music greats including the late R&B/jazz hero Bernard Wright, whose performances on three tracks would be some of his final recorded appearances. Other guests on Mustard n’Onions include star saxophonist Karl Denson, founding Robert Glasper Experiment member Casey Benjamin, Snarky Puppy standouts Mark Lettieri and Jay Jennings, pedal steel luminary Travis Toy, electric-bass GOAT Marcus Miller, blues-rock god Eric Gales, and many more.
