Recreating the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, Florida-Style
Fifty years ago, three of the biggest bands on the nascent jam scene headed to Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway in New York July 28, 1973, for Summer Jam, where one quarter of the 600,000 attendees actually purchased a ticket!
The Grateful Dead had played a concert in Hartford in 1972 where they invited the members of The Allman Brothers Band on stage to jam. The following summer, those two bands played two shows in sweltering 100°+ heat at RFK Stadium June 9 and 10. For the Summer Jam, The Band were added to the lineup.
