King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Take on Tennessee in Drag

It’s no secret that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are currently making history with their U.S. residency tour that began in Pelham, Tennessee, this past weekend, June 1-4. The tour kicked off with two nights inside the iconic Caverns venue, where around 1,200 lucky fans got to experience the Aussie wizards shredding in a cave. The next two nights were above The Caverns at the venue’s outdoor amphitheater.

Super fans began lining up outside the venue as early as 10 a.m. Saturday morning for the June 3 show, decked out in homemade King Gizzard clothing and costumes. The energy in the campgrounds and the parking lot was high while you weaved through cars looking at King Gizzard art and DIY merch, which is encouraged by the band. The scene felt similar to Shakedown Street before Grateful Dead shows, only with a little less tie-dye.

Each band member of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard entered the stage in drag, which made quite a statement on Tennessee’s most recent laws that were fortunately deemed unconstitutional by a judge on the same day as the show. Guitarist Joey Walker announced, “This ain’t no protest, baby. This is a celebration!”

After making a memorable entrance, KGLW opened with “Rattlesnake” from their Flying Microtonal Banana album, which was fitting considering the area was known for having those venomous reptiles.

From then on, some of the band members kept up their drag appearances by reapplying lipstick and Ambrose stripping off his dress down to a red silky slip while singing “Straws In The Wind.”

To many fans’ surprise, KGLW also played one of their latest songs, “Witchcraft,” which will be featured on the band’s upcoming album PetroDragonic Apocalypse, an album that was described as “heavy as fuck” by the band themselves.

The night then ended with one of the band’s early songs, “Head On/Pill,” which is featured on their 2013 album Float Along–Fill Your Lungs. Ending on such a high note, the band threw their dresses, pearls, funky sunglasses, and other items to the crowd as souvenirs for some fortunate fans.
