Turning Jannus Live into House of Lett for New Year’s Eve

Lettuce in the house for New Year’s Eve? Damn skippy! Jannus Live in downtown St. Petersburg is your destination, and there is still room for a few more heads!

Lettuce

Lettuce is one of the greatest funk machines on the planet, truly a force of nature. Their last two visits to the Sunshine State were at Suwannee Hulaween and then three weeks ago at North Beach Music Festival in Miami. At the time, we wrote:

Lettuce performed at Suwannee Hulaween, and it was a good set, but it was no match for this heater. The Lettuce boys threw down!

“The Lock” had a great electronic trumpet solo from Eric “Benny” Bloom and a hot guitar solo from Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff. Then it got stupid, completely badass, with the Rhythm Kings (Erick “Jesus” Coomes on bass and Adam Deitch on drums) doing what they do best. After a Ryan Zoidis alto solo, they motivated into “The Payback,” James Brown’s 1973 smash. Nigel Hall was in fine form on vocals and keyboards.

Before they began “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” they called to the stage both Skerik and Karl Denson. It was a party before; now it turned into a full-on rave. After Skerik and Karl Denson left the stage, the band immediately shifted into “House of Lett.” After three and a half minutes of “House,” Coomes took a short bass feature. When the full band returned, Smirnoff led them into Ronnie Laws’ 1975 smash tune “Always There” for seven full minutes, including solos by Bloom and Zoidis, before the brief Deitch feature and “House” coda. Otherwordly, that was.

And they continued to demonstrate why they ARE LettuceFunk. There was a “Boogie On Reggae Woman” tease, Smirnoff with some amazing guitar tones, and Nikki Glaspie joining in on a percussion discussion with Deitch. And the closing version of “Squadlive” was heavy on “Can I get a witness?” DAMN!
