Jazz is Dead Plan Great Return Next January

The band Jazz is Dead celebrated the music of The Grateful Dead and have been doing so since 1998 (with a hiatus 2006-2015). The group have been planning their return for some time, and details have emerged with personnel and tour dates.

Founding member Alphonso Johnson (bass) came to prominence in the ’70s with Weather Report and the Cobham-Duke Band and later with Steve Kimock, Phil Collins, Bob Weir’s Bobby & the Midnites, and The Other Ones in addition to his own bands. The band has featured a spectacular array of jazz, fusion, and rock musicians including Billy Cobham, T. Lavitz, Jimmy Herring, Rod Morgenstein, Jeff Sipe (Apt. Q258), Tom Constanten, Jeff Pevar, Chris Smith, Dave Livolsi, and Kenny Gradney. They also issued four outstanding albums:

The band’s sixth iteration will feature Johnson, Pete Lavezzoli (percussion), Steve Kimock (guitar), and Bobby Lee Rodgers (guitar). Lavezzoli plays with South Florida band Crazy Fingers, was a member of JGB, and has performed with Oteil & Friends, Phil Lesh & Friends, Trouble No More, and numerous others. Kimock has performed with his own bands and Zero, KVHW, The Other Ones, RatDog, and Phil Lesh & Friends. Rodgers has fronted his own bands, played with Col. Bruce Hampton (Ret.) in The Codetalkers, toured with Jimmy Herring and Jeff Sipe (Apt. Q258), and recently played with Melody Trucks in A MighTy BLuR.

2023 marks the band’s 25th anniversary. And speaking of anniversaries, the group toured in 2006 on the 30th anniversary of Blues for Allah. The January tour will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Wake of the Flood.

Most of these shows will go on sale either Thursday, August 4, or Friday. August 5. The tour will begin on the West Coast, move to the Midwest for dates, and finish on the East Coast.
