Styx Taking Fresh Music on the Road This Summer

Last year’s Crash of the Crown was officially three years in the making as the follow-up to Styx‘s 16th studio album, 2017’s The Mission. During that time many things happened, including a pandemic which shelved live music for nearly two years and turned the world inside out. Also in that timeframe, the band, comprised of original members guitarist James “JY” Young and sometimes appearing bassist Chuck Panozzo along with longtime members Tommy Shaw, Lawrence Gowan, Todd Sucherman and Ricky Phillips were determined and focused on producing their latest work that actually started in pre-pandemic 2019, with recording taking place at Shaw’s home studio in Nashville.

The record didn’t come easily, with all members in different parts of the country getting together to record, coupled with travel and social distance restrictions, posed a logistical nightmare that made it a challenge getting the band together and into the studio. The title track from Crash of the Crown doesn’t disappoint, exemplifying the classic Styx sound that embodies bits and pieces from previous works delivering a progressive guitar-heavy tune that is all Styx.  Fortunately, the longtime progressive rockers are fresh and rested and are hitting the road this summer, bringing along some fresh tunes with friends REO Speedwagon and Loverboy. Styx played to a sold-out jam-packed crowd at Pompano Beach Amphitheater back in February (read about that show here) but return with two of rock and roll’s chart-topping heavyweights and will make two Florida stops, in Tampa (June 18) and West Palm Beach (June 19).

“I can’t think of a better way of touring the USA next year than with good friends we’ve known for years and performed with on many a stage. What a great night of music this will be!” – Tommy Shaw
