Kanye West Pulls Out of Coachella
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye late last year, has announced that he won’t be performing at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival that will take place in less than two weeks.
The 24-time Grammy Award-winning rapper was scheduled to headline the long-running festival on April 17 and 24 but announced on Monday (April 4) that he will no longer be attending the annual event that draws more than a quarter million fans annually. Ye has not formally announced the reason for his withdrawal, However, there is speculation that this action was in part due to his current well-publicized online tirades with ex-wife Kim Kardashian as reported by Page Six. The billionaire rapper has been reported to be staying out of the public eye while seeking therapy for the aforementioned mental struggles with his ex-wife and her new love interest, actor/comedian Pete Davidson.
Ye was set to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards show on April 3, but show organizers cancelled his appearance citing “concerning online behavior” as the reason. He was offered the opportunity to walk the red carpet and attend the awards show, but Ye decided to forgo the entire event instead. Ye won two golden gramophones out of three nominations at this year’s show in Las Vegas, winning Best Rap Singer and Best Melodic Rap Performer.
Fellow rapper and close friend Travis Scott was scheduled to perform with Ye, but, according to TMZ, Scott has dropped out as well. Ye and Scott were to perform at Coachella alongside Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, and Swedish House Mafia. This of course leaves festival producer Goldenvoice (owned by AEG) with a major dilemma as to who will fill the two headlining dates. Across the music industry, it has been rumored that The Weeknd is engaged in talks to perform the headline slots for the Indio, California-based music festival.
