Newport Jazz Festival Reveals Initial 2022 Lineup
The venerable Newport Jazz Festival returns to Newport, Rhode Island’s Historic Fort Adams State Park this summer with an all-star lineup that includes Norah Jones, Esperanza Spalding, The Fearless Flyers, Angelique Kidjo’s Remain In Light, Terence Blanchard, PJ Morton, The Ron Carter Quartet, BADBADNOTGOOD, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and many more. Set to take place July 29 – 31, the event will also showcase a performance of soon-to-be-announced special guests celebrating the life festival founder George Wein, who died peacefully last September at the amazing age of 95.

Staying true to the festival’s ongoing commitment to diversity, the extensive bill will also feature artists with roots in jazz representing multi-faceted genres such as jazz fusion, funk, R&B, and jam. 2022’s multitudinous offerings include Lettuce, Cory Wong, Sons of Kemet, Nubya Garcia, Jazzmeia Horn, Nate Smith + KINFOLK, Jason Moran & The Bandwagon, Benevento/Russo Duo Acoustic, Nicholas Payton Trio, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Makaya McCraven, Yussef Dayes, Antonio Sanchez & Bad Hombre, MonoNeon, Shabaka Hutchings, Vijay Iyer Trio, The Baylor Project, The Soul Rebels, Sampa The Great, Celisse, Emmet Cohen Trio, The Nth Power, Theon Cross, Thana Alexa: Ona, Lady Blackbird, Tuba Skinny, Samara Joy, Melanie Charles, Giveton Gelin, Holly Bowling, and Laufey, with more artists to be announced.

Founded by Wein in 1954, the festival is well known for its historic collaborations such as 1970’s notable tribute to Louis Armstrong featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby Hackett, Joe Newman, Wild Bill Davison, and Jimmy Owens. This year’s ensemble performances promise to be no less earth-shattering, including a show featuring Christian McBride, the festival’s artistic director, reprising his annual Jawn Jam with guests Makaya McCraven, Chris Potter, Vijay Iyer, Brandee Younger, and Mike Stern. For the uninitiated, the word “Jawn” is Philadelphia slang meaning a person, place or thing.

Other highlights include Jack DeJohnette appearing with his new quartet comprised of DeJohnette, Don Byron, Matt Garrison, and Luisito Quintero; The Mingus Big Band celebrating the 100th birthday of the legendary bassist and composer; The Benevento/Russo Duo Acoustic with Mark Benevento and Joe Russo; and Joe Lovano’s “Trio Tapestry” with Marilyn Crispell and Carmen Castald. Stay tuned for more announcements.
