ODESZA Breaks Radio Silence with Hypnotic New Single “The Last Goodbye” featuring Bettye LaVette

They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. This couldn’t be more true for fans of the Grammy-nominated modern electronica duo ODESZA, whose intoxicating new single “The Last Goodbye” featuring legendary blues and soul singer Bettye LaVette marks their triumphant return after nearly four long years of near radio silence.

The new tune heavily samples LaVette’s 1965 release “Let Me Down Easy,” a powerful, heart-wrenching tune that recently caught the duo’s attention. “The Last Goodbye” is a buoyant, operatic masterstroke of syncopated beats and synth artistry wrapped around LaVette’s soul-rending vocals that lands it squarely in anthemic territory. “This song was born out of the concept of trying to bring these lasting, defining musical pieces like the 1965 release of ‘Let Me Down Easy’ by Bettye LaVette into a modern and contemporary electronic setting,” notes ODESZA in a statement. “The idea of bringing two worlds together that at first seem distant has always been something we’ve been drawn to. It was an absolute honor to be able to work with Bettye’s voice over the course of writing the track. She’s able to convey emotion with her vocal work unlike any other. To date, this has been one of the more fulfilling songs we’ve had the chance to work on as artists. We hope everyone who listens enjoys the track as much as we did making it.”

The duo’s last studio LP was 2017’s A Moment Apart, which was nominated for for Best Dance/Electronic Album, at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018. A massive tour in support of the album followed its release with ODESZA (made up of producers and multi-instrumentalists Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight) playing to nearly three million fans worldwide. Since then, there’s been little activity but they have not been completely off the grid. They launched their own music festival SUNDARA in Riviera Maya, Mexico in 2019 and released a collaborative album entitled Bronson with Australian producer Golden Features in 2020.
