FunkCity.net Does North Beach: The Motet

Jake Funkmayor of FunkCity.net caught some great video at North Beach Music Festival December 10 & 11 in Miami. Here is his video of The Motet along with our review and photographs courtesy of slightly skewed photography and Scout It Out Media.

We knew that the set by The Motet was going to be special, given the special guests announced with the lineup. That still didn’t begin to touch the magic created on stage. For starts, drummer Dave Watts had his right-hand man (left-hand man, too) Jason Hann of The String Cheese Incident on percussion the entire set. After launching with a Joey Porter talk box workout, Hartswick and The Horn Section jumped in on “Rynodub.” Ryan Jalbert killed on guitar as did Brouwers on trumpet.

From there it just got ridiculous (full notes in setlist). Drew Sayers and The Horn Section blew up the incredible Afrobeat of “Cheap Shit.” Hartwick and Elias tore it up together, and Jeremy Schon of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong ripped on “Nemesis.” If there was a set highlight, for me it was the medley of two songs from the band’s eponymous 2014 release: “Closed Mouths Don’t Get Fed > Keep On Don’t Stoppin’” with Hartswick firmly in control.

[MOTET: You Can’t Fool Me, Rynodub (Jen horns), Cheap Shit (Josh + Chris horns), Highly Compatible (Jen horns + Shira), Nemesis (Jeremy), Closed Mouths Don’t Get Fed > Keep On Don’t Stoppin’ (Jen), Drums (Jason), Death or Devotion (Jen + Shira), Get it Right (Jen horns + Shira)]
