
Carlos Marín, Il Divo Vocalist, Dead at 53
German born pop-operatic baritone singer Carlos Marín has died following a short hospitalization. He was 53.
The remaining members of the longtime quartet Il Divo — David Miller, Sébastien Izambard, and Urs Bühler — announced on Sunday, December 19, that their friend and partner had passed away. The news of his passing was shared via social media. ll Divo had been in the middle of a U.S. tour when Marín got sick, requiring the group to pause the tour while Marín entered the Intensive Care Unit December 8 in the United Kingdom. Although no official cause of death has been announced, Variety reports the death as a result of COVID-19 complications.
“It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away. He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There wiIl never be another voice or spirit like Carlos,” said in a statement. “For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend. We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace.”
Born Carlos Marín Menchero in Hessen, Germany, Marín’s family moved to Spain at age two, where the baritone singer began his singing career at age 8 and went on to record his first album that same year. He would record his second album just two years later at age 10 and continued to study piano and solfeggio. Marin would become a Spanish television icon and a distinguished opera performer who sang in front of thousands along with his orchestra from age 15 to 20. In 2003, Marín became a member of the global quartet Il Divo where he created music and toured worldwide before his death on December 19.
Since forming the group in 2003, Il Divo have released ten studio albums, selling in excess of 30 million copies, reaching gold and platinum status worldwide. The supergroup was formed by English television personality Simon Cowel (American Idol, The X Factor, America’s Got Talent): four classically trained singers from Switzerland, Spain, France, and the United States who became a touring group performing to sold-out audiences worldwide.
