Tank and The Bangas Release Raucous New Single & Video “Big” Featuring Big Freedia: WATCH
Whenever the combustable pairing of New Orleans’ own Tank and The Bangas and Big Freedia get together, one thing is sure to the ensue: joyous, unfettered mayhem set to infectious beats. Tank’s thespians of outrageous fun and the high priestess of bounce have delivered just that with the release of “Big,” the rollicking new single and video that are guaranteed to get even the most inert butts moving.
Directed by Marion Hill, the video stars Big Freedia and Tank and The Bangas’ front woman Tarriona “Tank” Ball in a high-energy, bounce-heavy, phantasmal romp that also features the rest of the band, including Albert Allenback (saxophone, flute), Joshua Johnson (drums), and Norman Spence (keys). The release of the video and single “sets the stage for more music to come soon,” according to a statement from the band.
“This song boasts big energy from two talented New Orleans artists,” said drummer Joshua Johnson. “Tank effortlessly twists and turns lyrics at will during the verses only to open the stage for Big Freedia to join her on the hook. Anytime Tank and The Bangas and Big Freedia get together it’s a banga, but this time it’s a BIG one!”
Indeed it is with Tank demonstrating why she’s got the “juice” to get the world jumping to the kinds of irresistible, jubilant rhythms only New Orleans can birth. “Big ass / Big mouth / Big things / Big house / Everything I do is big / Chillin’ at Big Freedia’s house,” she declares with Big Freedia egging her on in the best way possible.
The “juice” is central to the video’s story as it begins with Big Freedia and Tank brewing up a concoction that infects the whole neighborhood with booty-shakin’ madness. The “juice” also results in numerous hilarious costume and scenery changes where the entire entourage are clearly having more fun that humans should be allowed to have. Check out the shenanigans in the video below.
“Big”’s release follows a string of successes including NPR’s “Tiny Desk” contest win for their single “Quick” in 2017, a Grammy nomination in 2019 for their major label debut Green Ballon, and the 2020 release of their latest EP Friends Goals featuring contributions from PJ Morton, Duckwrth, and CHIKA. The band’s resume is filled with appearances at major festivals such as Newport Jazz Festival, Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Hulaween. Tank and The Bangas have also wowed TV audiences on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Austin City Limits and Today.
The video and single also come on the heels of Big Freedia’s latest EP Big Diva Energy released in September, featuring a guest appearance by Galactic front woman and frequent Tank and the Bangas collaborator Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph.
