Adele Releases ‘Easy On Me,’ Her First New Music in 6 Years

Fifteen-time Grammy Award-winning British singer/songwriter Adele has released her first new music in six years. The mezzo-soprano vocalist released “Easy On Me” on Friday, October 15, as a single along with an accompanying video that has already garnered more that 40 million views in its first day.

Adele’s previous album 25 was the artist’s third studio album, released on November 20, 2015; it became a chart-topping global success with mega-hits “Hello” and “Someone Like You.”

“Easy on Me” is the first single released from her upcoming album 30, set for release November 19. It is an emotionally-charged tune about the divorce experience and the moral dilemma about whether to keep her commitment in the face of personal unhappiness. She had been with Simon Konecki in 2011, and they were married in 2018. The marriage would only last three years, leading to their divorce this past March. In the soulful song that combines a melodic combination of pitch and rhythm, the immensely talented Adele hints at her new-found love, boyfriend Rich Paul, whom she became romantically involved recently.

The song truly showcases Adele’s powerful vocals, accompanied only by piano melody. In the music video that begins in black and white, it shows Adele leaving an empty house that has been. She then is seen driving off in her car, pulling a small trailer with her belongings, in search of rediscovering herself. Consumed by her own emotions, she doesn’t acknowledge a newlywed couple who drive past her, celebrating their moment of nuptial bliss. In what appears to be her leaving her past behind her, sheets of music fly out the back seat as she travels down a winding road. As she drives on, she mentions how hard she has tried to change who she was but realizes that is futile. At that moment, that black-and-white video transitions into vivid color, reflecting on her acceptance of the outcome of her relationship despite her efforts to make things work. She embraces her new found freedom and regains faith that she will find love once again.

Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins and known simply as Adele, the 33-year-old found early success after graduating the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology. Her first album 19, named after her age at the time, won several British awards, leading to a record deal with Columbia Records, breaking her into the U.S. market. During that same year, she embarked on a short North American tour.

There ain’t no gold in this river
That I’ve been washing my hands in forever
I know there is hope in these waters
But I can’t bring myself to swim
When I am drowning in this silence
Baby, let me in

Go easy on me, baby
I was still a child
Didn’t get the chance to
Feel the world around me
I had no time to choose what I chose to do
So go easy on me

There ain’t no room for things to change
When we are both so deeply stuck in our ways
You can’t deny how hard I have tried
I changed who I was to put you both first
But now I give up

Go easy on me, baby
I was still a child
Didn’t get the chance to
Feel the world around me
Had no time to choose what I chose to do
So go easy on me

I had good intentions
And the highest hopes
But I know right now
It probably doesn’t even show

Go easy on me, baby
I was still a child
I didn’t get the chance to
Feel the world around me
I had no time to choose what I chose to do
So go easy on me
