ONE NIGHT ONLY: Leisure Chief and La Lucha

First of all, this should NOT be a one-night-only event; these two fine bands — Leisure Chief and La Lucha — should sound great together tonight (Saturday, September 18) at Shuffle in Tampa. but don’t wait for the next time they get together: check them out tonight beginning at 7:30 (doors at 6:30).

Both of these bands have been on the scene for the years and years and have continued impress fans of jazz, fusion, soul, R&B, and more. This meeting of bands from the Orlando and Tampa areas is long overdue and most likely to demand encore shows in the near future.

Leisure Chief, from Orlando, can rock out, make it mellow, and dive deep into jazz and fusion, and recently they have they specialized in gorgeous silky soul jazz. Leisure Chief are: Derek Engstrom, lead vocals, background vocals, acoustic guitar, drums; Christian Ryan, saxophones, background vocals; Jordan Garno, Fender Stratocaster guitar; Keegan Matthews, Fender Rhodes Mark II, organ, synths, vocoder, keyboards; and Chris McMullen, Fender Precision bass. Their latest album Cosmic Comics was released in January.

La Lucha, from Tampa, is a trio consisting of three best friends from three different parts of the world: Colombia (Alejandro Arenas, bass), Mexico (John O’Leary, piano), and the United States (Mark Feinman, drums). Their music ventures boldly into a wide variety of musical styles, offering an appealing and fun mix of genres under the jazz umbrella. They are constantly in demand and have toured in Europe, here in the U.S., and extensively in Florida. Everybody Wants to Rule the World is their latest offering, issued June of 2020.
