The Inaugural, First-ever, Debut… Hippy Hill Dead Fest

Look, they just wanted to make sure YOU knew there had never been one of these before, although they DID have one scheduled last year, but, well, you know. Hippy Hill Dead Fest takes place July 30 & 31 at Bill Monroe Music Park & Campground in Brown County Indiana. There is onsite camping; bring your coolers and lawn chairs and set a spell.

Many of the bands on the lineup were, in fact, on the lineup for 2020, which COVID quashed, of course. So you better believe that these men and ladies will bring it big time in celebration of Jerry Garcia’s birthday August 1.

Headliners are the outstanding Rumpke Mountain Boys and Joe Marcinek, the man who conjures up bands from all of corners of the nation, absolutely jammed-packed with some of the greatest musicians on the scene.

Rumpke Mountain Boys

Rumpke Mountain Boys hail from the mountains of Cleveland, where they’ve been perfecting their particular blend of jamgrass, the delightful trashgrass! The Boys are: JD Westmoreland, bass, vocals; Adam Copeland, guitar, vocals; Ben Gourley, mandolin, vocals; and Jason Wolf, banjo, vocals. The band’s most recent release is In Good Company, a fine live recording.

Joe Marcinek just wrapped up two nights in Asheville with George Porter Jr. Those two recorded Dead Funk Summit several years ago. Marcinek’s new album JM4 was recorded in March with Nikki Glaspie, Tony Hall, and Shaun Martin, and he just played a series of shows with Michelangelo Carruba, Roosevelt Collier, Ola Timothy, and Tommy Shugart. For this show, Marcinek will be accompanied by Andy Sutton and Kris Lohn.

The lineup is thick with hippies, jamsters, and Dead tribute outfits, including: Rich Mahan and Mostly Dead, Graciously Departed, Flatland Harmony Experiment, Black Rock Serenaders, The Lazy Lightning Band, United States Blues Band, Barney Muggers Street Band, DOSE, James Booth, East Side Soul, Richie Shakin’ Nagan, Hooteroll (Nashville’s Jerry Garcia tribute band), Howard, Derek Howard, Pushing Daisy’s Band, Slouchers, and “Smilin’” Joe Smith.
