Roosevelt Collier Set for Birthday Bash, Afro Roots Fest

Pedal and lap steel sensation Roosevelt Collier has some special events on the horizon, beginning with his Birthday Bash at The New Standard in Winter Park, Florida, Saturday, April 24.

This will be madness. Collier has assembled, once again, a stunning quartet for the event, including Shaun Martin, keyboard wizard, vocalist, and leader of Shaun Martin Three-O (and formerly with Snarky Puppy), bassist Matt Lapham of Shak Nasti and a regular with Collier, and [PAUSE] a young man on drums you simply HAVE to see AND hear to believe: Mike Mitchell, much better known as Blaque Dynamite, on drums.

But wait! There’s more! Spectacular fusion quartet Electric Kif are on the bill, as is the superb Tommy Shugart Organ Trio. Better fasten your seatbelts!

On May, Collier headlines the Afro Roots Fest at the North Miami Beach Bandshell (think GroundUP Festival), and event that was virtual last year. It’s all the way live May 1!

“We are excited to get back to presenting live music to a live audience, and look forward to having Roosevelt Collier with special guests Richard Bona and Weedie Braimah, and Philip Montalbán entertain folks live, and Vieux Farka Touré and Fulu Miziki do so virtually,” says Executive and Artistic Director Jose Elias. “This event could not have been possible without the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairsthe City of Miami BeachCultural Affairs Program, Cultural Arts Council, the Rhythm Foundation, the Broadmore Hotel, and Afropop Worldwide.”

The Roosevelt Collier Trio heads to Jensen’s in Winter Haven May 8 for a show. There will be much more to come, but with your long-distance lenses take a quick glimpse at Orange Blossom Revue (NOT to be confused with Orange Blossom Jamboree in May), a new event in Lake Wales December 3 & 4!
