Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal Call Out Those “Sunday Lies”

In May, we wrote about the first three singles released by Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal from the group’s upcoming album Natural Born Hustlers. As they continue to work toward the debut of the album, a new single, “Sunday Lies,” has been issue to accompany “Hustler,” “Automatic,” and “The Night.”

This new one packs a punch both musically and lyrically. Let Hoyer explain:

I wanted a looping, layered groove that propelled the song under a nice blend of jazz and blues changes to follow the vocal line. The co-opting of religious messages by politicians to affect a change in voter dynamics often is done with a large chasm between word and action. Sadly, it appears many people of faith either are unwilling to accept this truth or are blinded by said faith. This song is a meditation on those in power corrupting the message, those missing the actual truths behind the message, and those that see through the lies.

Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal are: Josh Hoyer, vocals, organ, piano; Benjamin Kushner, guitar; Mike Keeling, bass; Harrison El Dorado, drums; and Blake DeForest, trumpet. For this recording, Luke Annis, trombone, was added to the session. The horn arrangements were DeForest’s. Hoyer wrote the tune.

This is another gem produced by Eddie Roberts at Color Red Music; he also was the tracking and mixing engineer. James Fleege did the overdubs at Silver Street Studios, and it was mastered at Doug Krebs Mastering.
