Zappa Fans Glad “The Torture Never Stops”: Halloween 81

This year’s Frank Zappa Halloween extravaganza package revolves around the storied shows at The Palladium in New York in 1981. The six-CD box set includes all manner of paraphernalia in addition to the music: great liner notes, superb photographs, and a cape and mask! The box set will be available October 2.

Halloween 81: Live At The Palladium, New York City, recorded on October 31, 1981 (two shows) and November 1, 1981 (1 show), is the next of the iconic Frank Zappa Halloween boxset concerts. The box consists of 6 CDs containing 3 complete concerts featuring all tracks newly mixed from the original multi-track tapes shocking fans with 78 unreleased live tracks. Fans will be treated to a Count Frankula mask along with a red & black cape as well. This king-size offering also showcases a 40-page booklet with photos including new liner notes by touring band member Robert Martin, Vaultmeister Joe Travers and fan-in-attendance Gary Titone. Last year’s box set feted the Halloween 73 show in Chicago. In 2017, the Halloween 77 box set honored the first year that the Halloween shows moved from The Felt Forum to The Palladium. This new set offers 78 unreleased tracks and more than seven hours of music from the early and late shows on 10.31.81 and the 11.01.81 show. Zappa and band also played on 10.29.81 and 10.30.81.

 

 

The group at this point featured several familiar faces: Frank Zappa, guitar, vocals; Ray White, guitar, vocals; Ed Mann, percussion; Tommy Mars, keyboards; and Steve Vai, guitar; and several new ones: Scott Thunes, bass; Chad Wackerman, drums; and Bobby Martin, keyboards, vocals.
