Raffi Reimagines “Buffalo Gals” as “Portland Moms”

If you have children, it’s highly likely you’ve sung songs such as “Baby Beluga,” “Apples and Bananas,” and “Down by the Sea” with them, joining the many delightful albums, videos, and concerts of the wonderful Raffi, who has been writing and performing music for children for more than 45 years. His melodies are timeless gems, and you might be singing them in your head right now.

[And, if somehow you missed the Raffi tsunami, make sure you share his music with your children and grandchildren!]

Raffi’s newest video is not one of his songs but rather a reworking of the traditional American song “Buffalo Gals.” He did so to honor the amazing Portland Moms who have come out to show their support for equality and to protest white supremacy, adding new lyrics.

Portland Moms won’t you come out tonight,
come out tonight, come out tonight
Portland Moms won’t you come out tonight,
by the light of the silvery moon

Black Lives Matter won’t you come out tonight,
come out tonight, come out tonight
Black Lives Matter won’t you come out tonight,
by the light of the silvery moon

Wall of Vets won’t you come out tonight,
come out tonight, come out tonight
Wall of Vets won’t you come out tonight,
by the light of the silvery moon

Strong and Peaceful won’t you come out tonight,
come out tonight, come out tonight
Strong and Peaceful won’t you come out tonight,
by the light of the silvery moon

Raffi, who plays guitar, is accompanied by Lindsay Munroe on vocals and Ivan Rosenberg on dobro.

And the answer, it would appear, is YES!

And, for good measure, here are Raffi and Yo-Yo Ma on the 40th anniversary of “Baby Beluga”:
