Michelle Obama Teams with The Roots for Virtual Roots Picnic
Michelle Obama and her voter registration organization, When We All Vote, will be partnering with The Roots to take the13th Annual Roots Picnic virtual. Set to take place on June 27 at EDT, the online-only event will feature a mix of musical performances and appearances by celebrities urging fans to vote. The lineup includes performances by The Roots, who will also back Philly Neo-soul star Musiq Soulchild, along with H.E.R., Kirk Franklin, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch and more.
“The partnership comes from a shared ethos of wanting to reach the most underrepresented community of people when it comes to voting, black people between the ages of 21-35. Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote and The Roots have a common goal, to educate and inspire communities to use their voices and vote to make a difference,” said event organizers in a statement on the Roots Picnic Facebook page.
Originally scheduled for August 1 at the Mann Center in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, the event was canceled due to COVID-19. Co-produced by Roots’ manager Shawn Gee of Live Nation Urban, ?uestlove, Black Thought’s Two One Five Entertainment, and Dan Parise of DPS, the virtual experience is scaled down from the live event. DaBaby, Summer Walker, Meek Mill, and Ghostface are among the acts on the original Picnic bill who will not be going virtual. Broadcast exclusively on the Roots’ YouTube channel, the online event will be making up for their absence with appearances by Michelle Obama, Janelle Monáe, Tom Hanks, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kerry Washington, Lin-Manuel Miranda and more.
