Opening the Floodgates: Dick’s Picks Volume Three: Pembroke Pines 05.22.77
Today mark’s the 43rd anniversary of the Grateful Dead show at The Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines (Hollywood), Florida. This show was issued as Dick’s Pick’s Volume Three, the first of twelve concerts from that May released officially by the Dead. After a two-year hiatus, it was clear that the band were clearly on their stride.
That spring tour comprised 26 shows from The Spectrum in Philadelphia (04.22.77) through Hartford Civic Center (05.28.77), seven shows to close out April and then 19 in May, with three shows at The Capitol Theater in Passaic, five at The Palladium in New York, a pair at The Fox in Atlanta, and two more at Auditorium Theater in Chicago.
The next official release — Dick’s Picks Volume 29 — would include the second show at The Fox (05.19.77) and the show at Lakeland Civic Center (05.21.77), issued in 2003.
Ten years later, the stunning box set May 1977 landed, with 14 CDs chronicling five consecutive shows from the middle of May:
05.11.77 St. Paul Civic Center, St. Paul
05.12.77 Auditorium Theater, Chicago
05.13.77 Auditorium Theater, Chicago
05.15.77 St. Louis Arena, St. Louis
05.17.77 University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
Although most Dead fans already had the iconic Barton Hall show from Cornell in Ithaca (05.08.77), that merited a deluxe issue commemorating the 40th anniversary, both as a single three-disk set and as part of May 1977: Get Shown the Light, with four consecutive shows:
05.05.77 Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum, New Haven
05.07.77 Boston Garden, Boston
05.08.77 Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca
05.09.77 War Memorial Audiotorium, Buffalo
Think about that. Fully 12 of the 26 shows from this run have been officially issued by the band. All beginning with Garcia toodling, “Funiculi Funicula”!
