Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal: “Hustler” and More from Color Red

The continuously flowing fountain of music from Color Red Studios and Records in CO has just released the third single from Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal from Natural Born Hustler, the full-length album expected to be released in the fall. The album was recorded last year under the guidance of Eddie Roberts, guitarist extraordinaire of The New Mastersounds and the creative force behind Color Red. Roberts did the tracking and mixing, with the final mastering done by Doug Krebs at Doug Krebs Mastering.

Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal are: Josh Hoyer, vocals, organ, piano; Benjamin Kushner, guitar; Mike Keeling, bass; Harrison El Dorado, drums; and Blake DeForest, trumpet. For this recording, Luke Annis, trombone, was added to the session.

Hoyer and associates have successfully mined the incredibly rich vein of soulful music ore from the ’60s and ’70s that groups such as Monophonics have also used for inspiration. This is authentic soul music from that period. The first single, “Automatic,” is a tender ballad recalling the vocals of Lou Rawls and Tyrone Davis. The sextet skyrockets on “The Night,” pure soul revue.

And Friday “Hustler” dropped on our headphones, and it is clear three songs in that this album will be dynamite. The grit in Hoyer’s voice is palpable, etched with the strains of hard life. Roberts, whose career with The New Mastersounds has always honored that early funk and soul, makes this time-travel to the music of decades ago feel so real. The rhythm section makes this happen, and the horn accents are awesome. Kushner has a nice turn on guitar, and Hoyer seals the deal on organ.

Hoyer initially connected with Roberts through a project that released three songs in early 2019 from Josh Hoyer & the Macy Sounds. The collaboration featured Roberts, guitar; Pete Shand, bass; and Joe Tatton, keyboards (all three from The New Mastersounds); John Macy, pedal steel guitar; and Jeff Franca, drums (Thievery Corporation). The first single released was “Your Love is Like Water.” Check out all three Soul Colossal songs plus two from The Macy Sounds on this Soundcloud playlist.
