Whitney – Columbus, Ohio – A Look Back
Article and Photos by Aryanna Carpenter
On February 11th at Newport Music Hall, I had the opportunity to photograph and experience a wonderful and heartfelt performance. With everything happening in the world right now, my mind wandered back to that freezing night seeking solace in the smooth live performance that I was lucky enough to be a part of.
That night, the indie folk band from Chicago, Whitney, was playing in Columbus, Ohio, as a part of their tour of North America. Whitney was formed as a band in 2015; they have been signed with the record label Secretly Canadian since 2016. The band consists of two talented members; 29-year-old guitarist Max Kakacek and 27-year-old lead singer/drummer Julien Ehrlich. In 2007, Kakacek was a part of an indie rock band called North Westerns which disbanded in 2014. His old band along with Foxygen and Unknown Mortal Orchestra are associated acts or are similar in aesthetic to the band Whitney.
Whitney 2020 Tour
Whitney’s tour began on January 24 in Madison, Wisconsin, and ended on February 16 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On Whitney’s tour of North America, an alternative dance-punk girl band from Naoya, Aichi, Japan, called Chai was their opening act. Chai’s lively and dazzling performance followed by Whitney’s charming, harmonious and pleasant sound created a unique yet pleasurable contrast in the show. The show overall was captivating, laid-back and nothing but good vibes.
