Skull & Roses Festival Celebrates the Spirit of The Grateful Dead
With just weeks to go, anticipation is building for the fourth annual Skull & Roses festival set for April 2-5 at California’s Ventura County Fairgrounds. Celebrating the music and community created around The Grateful Dead, the festival features an all-star lineup including drummer and original member of The Dead Bill Kreutzmann, who will be performing with his side project Billy & The Kids; they have not taken the stage since 2016. In addition to Kreutzmann, the collective will feature Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits), Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green, Electric Beethoven, Golden Gate Wingmen) and guitarist Tom Hamilton (Ghost Light, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Electron).
Also headlining and returning for a second time will be Oteil & Friends including Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Company, The Allman Brothers Band), multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby (Terrapin Family Band), guitarist Eric Krasno (Soulive, Lettuce), jazz guitarist Tom Guarna (Blood, Sweat & Tears), vocalist Alfreda Gerald, drummer John Morgan Kimock (Mike Gordon), and vocalist Lamar Williams, Jr.
Additionally, Voodoo Dead with guitarist Steve Kimock, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti (Dead & Company), bassist George Porter Jr. (The Meters), guitarist Jackie Greene (The Black Crowes, Phil Lesh & Friends), and drummer John Morgan Kimock will also play a headlining set.

Rounding out the top of the bill will be Circles Around the Sun, Melvin Seals and JGB, Jackie Greene, Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass, Ghost Light, Grateful Shred, and David Nelson Band. An outstanding undercard includes Dead-inspired artists Midnight North, Pink Talking Fish Are Dead, Cubenis, Moonalice, Jerry’s Middle Finger, Dave Harrington’s Merry Pranksters, The Alligators, Grateful Dub and more.
Expanded to four days, Skull & Roses kicks off Thursday night with a pre-party featuring Stu Allen and Mars Hotel and a performance by Rooster Conspiracy featuring Eric Krasno, Jay Lane, Reed Mathis, and Todd Stoops.
Another new feature is limited GA Plus tickets which include a number of added benefits such as access into Hunter’s Lodge, a comfy indoor space where patrons can attend intimate performances and interviews with some of the festival’s artists. GA Plus ticket holders can also enjoy The Hight Time Lounge, a sun-sheltered tent featuring views of both stages, cushy furniture, full-service cash bars, reserved bleacher seating adjacent to the stages, and air-conditioned bathrooms.
Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to give back to a music community that has brought them so much joy by participating in a silent auction benefiting Backline, a non-profit which provides music professionals and their families with quick and easy access to mental health and wellness resources.
