TWYN Add ‘Side B’ to Their August Release “ii.”
Back in August, we said:
TWYN have doubled your pleasure with the release of their new two-song single ii. (note that the title of the release is “ii.”). This follows the duo’s three previous singles: “Distopia” (2018), “You Say” (2018), and their first single, “Cast Me Out,” from 2017.
TWYN is a collaboration from two outstanding Miami-area musicians who play in other bands as well. Keyboard wizard Jason Matthews is a member of the great fusion quartet Electric Kif, who also have a new album out, and he performs often backing Roosevelt Collier. He also has four Latin Grammy nominations for his production on Danay Suarez‘s critically praised album Palabras Manuales. Drummer Aaron Glueckauf is a member of the excellent funk band Lemon City Trio. The two have been making collaborating since 2010, starting the underground hip hop group The Politix.
Now they are back with the “B side” of ii., which obviously would be ii. (b). It two contains two tracks, “Steptheque” and “Underwater.” Here are the instrumental particulars:
On “Steptheque,” Matthews plays Synth Bass, Roland Juno-6, and Prophet REV2; and Glueckauf: Drums. For “Underwater,” Matthews adds Mircro-Brute and Korg MS-20 to the mix, and there is additional guitar by Brian Robertson. All four tracks were recorded at City of Progress & The Hobbit; produced by Jason Matthews, Aaron Glueckauf & Brian Robertson; mixed by Brian Robertson; and mastered by Joe Lambert.
Both tracks are great livetronica. “Steptheque” has a Herbie Hancock vibe to it, delightfully choppy as it pulses along with Glueckauf’s on-point beats. “Underwater” certainly channels that feeling, with Matthews’ deeper-than-deep synth bass. His synths make you feel like you are floating underwater or somewhere in deep space.
Catch them if you can on the road, and download all four tracks using the Bandcamp link below.
