Thick as Thieves with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe

There are only a couple of gentlemen who qualify currently for the title of Hardest-Working Man in Show Business (the title originally bestowed upon James Brown). We can say for certain that one of those gentlemen is Karl Denson, affable leader of the Tiny Universe, dynamo of a performer, and friend and teacher to all in the community.

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe (hereinafter referred to as KDTU) throw down some of the heaviest funk and rock on the planet, and they are about to embark on the Thick as Thieves Tour. Their most recent album, Gnomes and Badgers, has garnered critical acclaim, as have each one of its predecessors.

This weekend finds KDTU at Crystal Bay Casino Lake Tahoe Saturday and the Sonoma Harvest Music Fest Sunday. The following Saturday (September 21) they play the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival in Franklin, Tennessee.

The Thick as Thieves Tour launches at the Charleston Pour House. The tour works up the East Coast and into the Midwest, finishing in Florida and Georgia. Thirteen of those dates will be with Thievery Corporation. And there is one special benefit show that Denson will play with Warren Haynes, Joe Russo, John Medeski, and George Porter, Jr. in support of DEBRA of America. (DEBRA is the name of an international medical research charity dedicated to the curing of EB, epidermolysis bullosa, “The Worst Disease You’ve Never Heard Of.”)

KDTU will celebrated the New Year with Leftover Salmon in Denver before hopping on Jam Cruise 18 early in January in Miami.

KDTU are: Karl Denson, alto sax, tenor sax, flute, vocals, percussion, dancing; DJ Williams, guitar, vocals; Zak Najor, drums; Chris Stillwell, bass; David Veith, keyboards; Chris Littlefield, trumpet, vocals; and Seth Freeman, guitar, slide guitar, lap steel guitar.
