Bonnie Blue Makes Annual Summer Colorado Tour
Rain. Hail. Snow. Temperatures in the 90s. What else could possibly happen to Colorado this summer?
Well, Bonnie Blue, for one thing. The dynamic Jacksonville rockers are making their annual summer caravan to Colorado this week, presented by Magnolia Roads. Their first show is Friday, July 19, at Old Town Pub in Steamboat Springs. Over two weekends they will play six shows, hitting Clark, Denver, Buena Vista, and Winter Park along the way.
This superb band crushed a monster set at Orange Blossom Jamboree, the annual Florida music showcase, in May. At the time we noted:
This was — by far — the best and most powerful set I’ve heard these Jacksonville rockers play. They opened with a jam that lead into “Gypsy Woman” and then “Blood for Gold,” two of the tunes from their exceptional album No Lookin’ Back. “Blood for Gold” began a great jam sequence with “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys > Porch Song > The Shape I’m In.” They killed all three covers.
“Best Friends” featured great interplay with Wright and bassist Adam Kenneway, then John Wilson on piano. Juanjamon joined the fun on “Trigger” with a cooking solo on tenor, and then Tony Tyler made it a three-guitar attack on “Beggars” with Willis Gore and Bradley Churchman.
Another great line: after their last song, video archivist Volke Mon ran up to me and said, “If you’d bet me $50 that Bonnie Blue was going to cover Hot Chocolate (“Everybody’s a Winner”), I’d be handing you a $50 bill!
Bonnie Blue are: Bradley Churchman, guitar, vocals; Willis Gore, guitar, vocals; John Wilson, Hammond B3, keyboards, vocals; and Adam Kenneway, bass. The band was originally formed by Churchman and Mayr. Kenneway came from great Jacksonville band Squeedlepuss, and Gore, formerly with Soul Gravy, also now performs with The Melody Trucks Band. For the Colorado run, Shaun Taunton from the Melody Trucks Band will play drums.
When the band returns to Florida, they’ll play the first-night Widespread Panic after-party Ocean Avenue Sports Bar & Grill in Saint Augustine FL.
