Second Wave of Artists Added to the 65th Annual Newport Jazz Festival Lineup
The Newport Jazz Festival just hit the music world with a second wave of artists joining an already breathtaking lineup for its 65th incarnation, and we can’t even. Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Dianne Reeves with Peter Martin, Romero Lubambo, and many more will be joining the initial lineup that includes jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Terence Blanchard (featuring the E-Collective) for three days of historic performances August 2-4.
Also riding that second wave will be Reginald Veal & Terreon Gully; The Ron Carter Trio; Dee Dee Bridgewater and the Memphis Soulphony; PJ Morton; Ghost-Note; Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society; Billy Hart Quartet w/Ethan Iverson, Mark Turner & Ben Street; Aaron Diehl; Hailu Mergia; IN COMMON: Walter Smith III, Matt Stevens, Joel Ross, Harish Raghavan & Kendrick Scott; Camila Meza & The Nectar Orchestra; DOMi & JD Beck; The Dayna Stephens Group; Mwenso & the Shakes; Tom Oren; and Mark Stryker: “Jazz from Detroit.”
Held in the postcard-perfect seaside town of Newport, Rhode Island, at Fort Adams State Park and the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the 65-year-old festival has featured such legendary giants as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Ray Charles and John Coltrane. Over the years it has reached beyond jazz to include blues, rock and soul. Led Zeppelin, Sly & The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, The Allman Brothers and B.B. King have all graced its stages.
“Since its inception 65 years ago, the Newport Jazz Festival has been the place for fans to see, hear and learn about new artists, as well as enjoy some of the leading bands on the music scene,” said Christian McBride, Artistic Director of the festival in a press release. “We’re pleased to continue the tradition of telling the story of jazz through these fabulous new and established artists, all on one great weekend.”
