ZenFest in Plant City FL: Practically a House Concert

Polar vortex, schmolar vortex, we don’t care. The weather is dandy in Florida, and festival season is once again off to a roaring start, with quite a few coming up in the next couple weeks, ranging from the majesty of the GroundUP Festival in Miami curated by Snarky Puppy and associates to the teeny, tiny ZenFest at All World Acres in Plant City February 8-9-10.

So let’s assume, for the sake of assuming, that you’re searching for something intimate and close to home on the west coast of the Sunshine State. ZenFest is as down-home, family-oriented, and downright cozy as it gets.

It takes place at All World Acres, an oasis among the farms in Plant City, home to Sustainable Living Fests, Holistic Health Fairs, and numerous pagan events including Harvest Rhythm, Yulefest, and the upcoming St. Brighid’s Fire February 15-16-17. ZenFest is AWA’s only music festival, and it is a fundraiser for the organization, helping to keep the property maintained for future events of all sorts. There is a permanent bathhouse with showers, a cafe serving great food, and limited camping space.

The bands who play ZenFest are donating their time to help keep the AWA spirit alive and well. The schedule includes a number of solo performers, spoken word artists, and several excellent bands as well. Saturday’s schedule includes the wildly unpredictable and always enjoyable Free Range Strange and Golden Era with MC Nook.

Topping the list are two bands who always make it out: Row Jomah and shoeless soul. Row Jomah are a superb quintet from Clearwater with several excellent albums to their credit. They perform great original material and add some dynamite covers to their set. They mix fusion, pop, funk, and rock in exactly the right proportions. shoeless soul from Dunedin are a wonderful quartet who claim to play Prozac pop, but their music comes from deep inside, and they delight both musically and lyrically. ZenFest is honored to have them return year after year.
