Star Kitchen Announces Pop-Up Shows Before Boarding Jam Cruise

It’s a Philadelphia thing. And everybody can understand, because it’s all about the funk. We’re talking about Star Kitchen, the new project put together by Marc Brownstein. The group made its debut in November with a four-show run, including the hometown show at The Ardmore that was broadcast by nugs.tv.

Brownstein is the bass player for The Disco Biscuits and also performs with Conspirator, Electron, and Breaking Biscuits. When we spoke last year on Jam Cruise, he spoke at length about his desire to put together this very different project.

The core quartet features fellow Philadelphian Danny Mayer on guitar; Mayer also plays in the Eric Krasno Band, Beau Sasser’s Escape Plan, and his own trio. The group also includes a fine keyboard player, Rob Marscher, who plays with Matisyahu and Addison Groove Project. Marlon Lewis (yep, Philadelphia) is the drummer, recognized for his work with Lauryn Hill and John Legend.

Brownstein and crew are gearing up for Jam Cruise 17 sailing from Miami January 15th. In the meantime, Star Kitchen have added two pop-up shows this Friday and Saturday (January 4th and 5th). Friday, the band will pop in The 8×10 in Baltimore, that funky little club. They will be joined by a “local” star, guitarist Jeremy Schon of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Saturday at StageOne in Fairfield, Connecticut, Shira Elias of Turkuaz will sing and dance with Star Kitchen.

Brownstein points out that these are both very small venues; get tickets ahead of time so you don’t get shut out!

The band has two slots on Jam Cruise, Wednesday late night on the pool deck and Saturday in the Spinnaker Lounge. The band will have lots of guests, including Jennifer Hartswick, Eric Krasno, Shira Elias and other members of Turkuaz. “Plus many more surprises!” Brownstein promises.

Marscher has a solo piano performance on Tuesday shortly after departure in The Atrium, and he will also be part of The Nth Power’s Rebel Music set in tribute to Bob Marley; he also played on The Nth Power’s new album titled Rebel Music.

And of course there’s no telling where you hear any of them pop up — in the Jam Room, the Jazz Room, or on stage with, well, use your imagination!
