Matador! Soul Sounds: Perfect Blend of Funk, Soul & Jazz
So Eddie Roberts and Alan Evans decided to put together a band. Because, you know, there just wasn’t enough funky soul pouring our of their respective bands, The New Mastersounds and Soulive! And they invented Matador! Soul Sounds.
About that name. The band bio explains:
Matador! Soul Sounds is a band loosely based on the concept of Spanish bullfighting. A common misconception in America is that bullfighting is a feat of one man versus one bull—in reality, bullfighting is largely a team effort by a matador and his cuadrilla.
Add to Roberts’ guitar and Evans’ drums a brilliant bassist in Kevin Scott from the Jimmy Herring Band and great keyboard player Chris Spies of Honey Island Swamp Band. That is one fine jazzy quartet right there. Now for some vocalists. Two of the very best front this band. Kimberley Dawson is well known to jam fans for her work with Pimps of Joytime, and we’ve also seen her on stage with The New Mastersounds, including last year’s sets on Jam Cruise 16. And she is joined by another singer with a great jam profile, Adryon de León from Orgōne.
And there you are, ladies and gentlemen: Matador! Soul Sounds.
In short order, they will board Jam Cruise (January 15-21, sailing from Miami). Before they do, though, Dawson and de León will be featured during Think: A Tribute to the Queen at The Fox Theatre in Boulder January 12th. Once on board JC17, Matador! Soul Sounds has the opening set on the Pool Deck (The New Mastersounds had that slot last year with Dawson) as we depart on Tuesday. Alan Evans is the Jazz Room host later that night. Matador also plays the Spinnaker Lounge Thursday evening, and there’s just no telling when or where any of them might pop up in the Jam Room or Jazz Room… or anywhere else, for that matter.
The band also has a four-night run in March, including a make-up date for their Ardmore Music Hall snow-out. The four shows, starting March 21st, begin in Uncasville CT before hitting the Brooklyn Bowl, The Ardmore, and Union Stage in DC.
