“Doin’ It Right” at Dunedin Brewery with Future Vintage

Different genres of music appeal to different people. Jamtronica happens to be one of my very favorites, that trance-dance so delightfully playing in my head. One of my favorite proponents is the band Future Vintage, whom I first ‘discovered’ five years ago or so playing at Dunedin Brewery. They have delighted in the more than three dozen shows I’ve seen them play since then.

Their show at DunBrew on Saturday, December 22nd, might be the best of the bunch. The trio always benefits from the opportunity to stretch out over two long sets, exploring a variety of avenues and approaches. They began with a tune written by Reed Skahill of Ajeva, who has on occasion sung with Future Vintage. From there, Matt Giancola grabbed his voice box tube for “Sugar Rock.”

Matt Giancola & Trevor McDannel

In my notes, next I wrote “that’s the shit.” Because it was. That glorious jam groove was driven by Eric Layana, whose drumming for this band is spot on. Bass player Trevor McDannel was simply outstanding here. And Giancola’s amalgam of funk, jazz and jam is perfecto. Somewhere long about “Baby Be Mine” McDannel got some great solo space and more on “Portal 8.” The funk got deeper than deep during “Save the Drama for Your Mama,” Giancola rockin’ on talk box and synths. And “Work It Out” was just outstanding. Time for set break.

Refreshed from the break and perhaps a fresh brew on tap, the trio plowed into the second set, “Do It” picking right up where they left off. Then Giancola honored a mutual favorite, Herbie Hancock, on “Tell Everybody.” WOW! Then it was fun with “Coupe de Ville” before some serious shakin’ on “Boogie On Down.”

Eric Layana

Alex Sears (S.P.O.R.E., Follow the Monarchs) was invited to join Giancola on synths to tear up “Supernova,” and they crushed it. McDannel was slap-happy as Giancola soared on electric piano. And the set concluded with Vinny Svoboda (Displace) on bass with a superb solo over a wicked vamp from Giancola and Layana.

That’s how you “Do It,” because these boys are “Doin’ It Right”!
