Full-Frontal Throw-Down Punk-Metal-Jazz-Something: Moon Hooch

I hereby declare that it’s not plagiarism if you plagiarize yourself. I’ll stand by these remarks I’ve made previously about Moon Hooch:

From February 2016:

If you have been on the jam scene for a while, you know there are certain groups who defy description, almost, anyway. Think The Dead Kenny Gs, Opposite Box, Telekinetic Walrus, The Bath Salt Zombies, The Mike Dillon Band, or Hoots and Hellmouth.

Moon Hooch belongs in that category. If you’ve seen them, try to put what they do in words. If you haven’t, try asking one of your friends who has. The word unique is an absolute modifier: who cannot be somewhat unique, in the same way that you cannot be kind of pregnant, or rather dead. You are… or you aren’t.

Moon Hooch is unique. They are the perfect mashup of a rock power trio and a saxophone quartet. Drummer James Muschler drives the engine that propels the music at a manic pace; he reminds you of Ginger Baker. And then there are the two boys with all their toys: Wenzl McGowen (Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Contrabass Clarinet, Tubes, EWI) and Mike Wilbur (Tenor Saxophone, Vocals, Synth).

From March 2017:

“Cave Music / ˈkāv myo͞ozik / It’s like House, but its more wild, more jagged, more free, more natural to live in.”

That is the music Moon Hooch claims to play. And everyone who has ever seen this Brooklyn trio knows that this description is 100% accurate. This is full-frontal throw-down punk-metal-jazz-something. What it is in concert is… riveting. You just get caught up in this unrelenting wave of sound, propelled by Ginger Baker-like drumming.

These guys are so damn good.

This Brooklyn trio cranks up their fall tour at home Wednesday, October 24th, before hitting the road. This 13-date run heads south to Florida and then back north. Their New Year’s run finds them in Cambridge, Providence, Burlington, and Northampton before the ball drop show at State Theater in Portland ME with The Motet and Jaw Gems.

If “full-frontal throw-down punk-metal-jazz-something” sounds like YOUR kind of something, you’d better find out! (Stole that one, too!)
