“Friends Don’t Let Friends Miss Turkuaz”
If you’re looking for PowerFunk, look no farther than Brooklyn NY. That’s where you’ll find the incredible nine-piece collective Turkuaz, the brainchild of guitarist Dave Brandwein. The band has been impressing ever since their debut in 2011 and have been steadily on the rise since then, but it would be fair to say that they made an enormous splash with the opening set on the deck of Jam Cruise 2017.
The band’s live show is stunning visually as well as aurally, a palette of colors painted across the stage, each member in his or her own color. And they can do it all: rock, funk, jazz, soul, Afrobeat, pop and all varieties in between. They have visited all the major jam festivals and numerous others as well.
This Friday (September 14th) they play the Wormtown Music Festival and the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival on Saturday. Turkuaz also joins Greensky Bluegrass for a show at Red Rocks, and then the fall tour proper starts in Syracuse. This tour covers most of the East Coast and the Midwest. Butcher Brown joins them for ten dates. They will also play The Moonshiner’s Ball and Suwannee Hulaween.
Turkuaz have four dates with Lettuce, starting with a Halloween show at Salvage Station in Asheville. They will also invite Andy Frasco and the U.N. for three shows. The band’s New Year’s run, with Too Many Zooz, will play Rochester before The Ball Drop in Worcester (with one more show TBA). And they’re back on the boat for the third time — Jam Cruise 17, that is.
Turkuaz are: Dave Brandwein [guitar, vocals], Taylor Shell [bass], Craig Brodhead [guitar, keys], Michelangelo Carubba [drums], Chris Brouwers [trumpet, keys], Greg Sanderson [tenor sax], Josh Schwartz [baritone sax, vocals], Sammi Garett [vocals], and Shira Elias [vocals].

In addition to all of the Turkuaz shows, four members of the band will be featured at Brooklyn Comes Alive on September 29th. This is a one-day, three-venue event with more than 50 artists involved in 15 different sessions. Carruba Compa Winderman features drummer Carruba matched up with Rob Compa and Eli Winderman from Dopapod. Guitarist Brodhead will also be playing.
Shira Elias’ Soul Tracks will feature heavy hitters Nikki Glaspie, Nick Cassarino and Nate Edgar (all The Nth Power), James Casey, Lyle Divinsky, Steve Swatkins, and Joel Gonzalez. And Elias and Garret will be part of the Purple Party in a tribute to Prince.
The group just completed their fourth studio album, Life in the City, which will be available September 28th and all along the fall tour after that date.

More? Turkuaz released live recording 040717 in the spring. And they just filmed a soul-shaking live performance at The Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg PA. Turkuaz cannot wait to get that one into your hands!
My dear friend Pat Williams said it first and said it best:
