The sixth annual Red Wing Roots Music Festival in Mt. Solon VA once again went off with nary a hitch. Roots fans came from far and wide to the beautiful Natural Chimneys Regional Park, to revel in a host of musical stylings, outdoor activities, and general Good Ol’ Times. The headliners/hosts The Steel Wheels have cultivated a great event that is almost a yearly sell-out due to a cap on attendance at 3,500, which really keeps things less hurried, less crowded, and CLEAN! I have never seen such a beautiful venue STAY that way through three days of music, and that is largely due to the many sustainable programs they employ.
Kleen Kanteen was there, offering reusable steel pint cups (at $10 a pop, but worth it!) which kept thousands of plastic cups from ending up in landfills. Beer Gardens created a more family-friendly vibe, and cyclists towing recyclable, compostable, and trash bin trailers throughout the park helped keep refuse to an absolute minimum (I didn’t see an overflowing receptacle once in the four days I was there).
There was no shortage of food vendors catering to a wide taste of foods. All delicious, all served quickly and with a smile. Arts and crafts, clothing, camping supplies and Red Wing Roots memorabilia were available throughout the expansive vendor and food area.
And there was music, and plenty of it! While we didn’t have a writer present, we had our own Jody Carbone and myself there to create a visual representation of what went down, so please take a few minutes to relive some of the many acts that put their hearts and souls into delivering a first-class event!
And many thanks to our hosts The Steel Wheels for having us and to all the awesome food and craft vendors, staff and volunteers for making Red Wing Roots a favorite for so many!
