Red Wing Roots Music Festival Kicks Off This Week
The sixth annual Red Wing Roots Music Festival kicks off this week with a stacked lineup and more activities than you can shake a stick at. The festival is being held in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley at the spectacular Natural Chimneys Park and Campground in Mt. Solon, Virginia, on July 13, 14 & 15.
Along with a lineup that brings together outstanding acts from across the Roots music family tree, there will be activities for the whole family to enjoy. Take some time to get out and explore the beautiful surroundings with organized hiking trips or bike rides, cool off in the creek, or check out the arts, crafts and food vendors.
The lineup includes Trampled By Turtles, Josh Ritter, Steep Canyon Rangers, I’m With Her, The Steel Wheels, Kuinka, The Secret Sisters, John Moreland, Colter Wall, Mipso, The War and Treaty, Charley Crockett, Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters, Ladama, Nicole Atkins, Parsonsfield, Scott Miller, The Tillers, Devon Gilfillian, Honeysuckle, David Wax Museum, Dori Freeman, Ellis Dyson and The Shambles, Ghost of Paul Revere, Jon Stickely Trio, Old Man Luedecke, Songs From the Road Band, Nora Jane Struthers and The Party Line, The Judy Chops, The Brothers Brother, Cicada Rhythm, Leah Blevins, The Way Down Wanderers, Dharma Bombs, Furnace Mountain, The Walking Roots Band, Blue Yonder, The Fernandez Sisters, and Ragged Mountain String Band.
The Asheville-based Jon Stickley Trio includes Jon Stickey on guitar, Lyndsay Pruett on fiddle and Hunter Deacon on drums. These three accomplished musicians have joined forces to create a sound that is new and yet raw that masterfully blends their influences from bluegrass, jazz, rock and beyond.
You won’t want to miss this set of New World Americana. Mipso formed in Chapel Hill, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that they are Trad Grass. They draw on their own musical influences from around the globe to create powerful arrangements and harmonious vocals will blow you away.
Of course the Steep Canyon Rangers are going to be awesome. Their latest album, Out in the Open, dropped in January of this year to high acclaim. These guys have stayed true to their roots while exploring new branches of the bluegrass musical family tree.
Be sure to thank The Steel Wheels for bringing this festival together by checking out their sets! Have your dancing shoes ready and prepare to have a face-splitting grin. Their unique and refreshing blend of folk and Americana with touch of bluegrass is infectious.
Go Green! No need to bring a case of bottled water. The folks from Kleen Kanteen will have water refill stations throughout the venue. You can bring your own or buy a reusable steel cup from the Beer Garden or at the merch tent. All food vendors will be using bio-based, recycleable and compostable disposable products. There will also be recycling bins available to help reduce landfill waste.
So gather your gear and plan on bringing home some amazing memories!
