2018 Lilli Trippe Memorial Shave at Northwest String Summit Starring… Rex Thomson!
The Northwest String Summit comes to Horning’s Hideout in North Plains OR July19-22. This incredible event features more than three dozen amazing bands, with Yonder Mountain String Band, Greensky Bluegrass, railroad Earth, The Infamous Stringdusters, Fruition and Mandolin Orange all playing multiple sets.
We will talk about the music in depth soon, but this post is more important. We’ll let the organizers explain:
In 2011, a beautiful tradition began at the Northwest String Summit. It all started with Lilli Trippe, a little girl who loved music, dancing, and Yonder Mountain String Band. For most of her short life, Lilli fiercely battled childhood cancer. In July of 2011, just a few days before her 4th birthday, Lilli passed away. Since then, every year on String Summit Sunday we honor our little friend Lilli by hosting a head shave while the rest of the crowd gets “Frilli for Lilli” by dressing up in their best Sunday Pink. This year, The Lilli Trippe Memorial Shave is proud to support Chelsea’s Closet– a local nonprofit that inspires hope and healing through dress up and therapeutic play in Pacific NW hospitals- giving seriously ill children the opportunity to dance like princesses and fly like superheroes.
This would be a wonderful cause and worthy of your support at any time, but this year ups the ante for all of us. The ubiquitous Rex Thomson, Mr. Festivals, is this year’s volunteer shavee (is that a word?). If you’ve been to any festivals, you know Rex. He is blessed with great skills at photography, videography, and writing for Live For Live Music, he is a very funny man, and his spirit is as wide as the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park.
Rex is the guy we’d all like to emulate, crisscrossing the country attending festivals right and left, interviewing musicians, and promoting our great scene every chance he gets.
He was so dedicated to this cause that he stopped shaving and getting his hair cut last year to make it all the more worthwhile to be the shavee at this year’s fest (and he’ll probably be glad to get rid of all that, too!).

Time to open up that wallet for a great cause and a great man. Do it now. You’ll feel better, and Rex will feel a whole lot better!
