Remembering the Legendary Earl Scruggs
The man that changed the world of bluegrass with his innovative banjo-picking method was born on January 6, 1924. The legendary Earl Scruggs was known for creating the three-finger banjo-pickin’ that we call “Scruggs style.” His career in bluegrass began with an invitation from Bill Monroe to join Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1944 with a regular gig at the Grand Ole Opry. It was there that he met guitar player and vocalist Lester Flatt. They would both leave the Blue Grass Boys in 1948 to create their own band, the Foggy Mountain Boys. The rest, as they say, is history.
Recorded in 1949, “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” was the first in a long list of Bluegrass classics that continue to inspire generations of musicians today.
