The Lee Boys and Trae Pierce & the T-Stones Bring South Florida Funk to Tampa August 5th
Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa has long been West Florida’s favorite music venue for many fans and artists alike. WMNF has been the favorite independent radio station in Central Florida for years now. Perfectly demonstrating why both this venue and this radio station have earned those distinctions is a show coming up Saturday, August 5th. Two bands, both of which are major draws at festivals all over the Southeast and beyond, are being teamed up for one great night of music. Both acts hail from South Florida and generally only get to Tampa once or maybe twice a year and usually at larger festivals. This is an extremely rare treat to see them both together at a small venue such as this.
Up first are The Lee Boys. The Lee Boys are described as ‘one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles.’ That description barely scratches the surface. Think ultra-high energy soul/funk combined with ripping pedal steel guitar licks, spiced up with more than a dash of gospel. Think of the music that you can’t help but stand up if you were sitting down. Think of the music that makes you smile and throw your hands up and dance. Now double whatever energy you had in mind, and you might start approaching what The Lee Boys put out. If you have never see The Lee Boys, I cannot stress enough how much this band should be on your radar. No one leaves their show without a smile on their face.
Following The Lee Boys are Trae Pierce & The T-Stones. This band is easily one of the hardest-hitting funk bands around. Blending funk, hip hop, blues, and straight-up rock licks, they create powerful grooves that will leave you breathless. The band is anchored by multi-Grammy-winning bassist Trae Pierce, who has played with The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Ohio Players and many more. Trae has surrounded himself with musicians who are up to the task of playing with the same fierce energy he brings. Witnessed at previous shows have been everything from bass played through a talk box, multiple bass players at once, keytars, drum solos that come off the stage and into the crowd during the drum solo itself, crowd-surfing guitar players, audience participation and more. This is a band that has more fun playing gigs than most, and it absolutely carries over into the crowd.
The Band will be pre-releasing a brand new single this week to WMNF, and there may even be an interview on Monday, so make sure to check out WMNF 88.5 for that come Monday.
Each of these bands alone would warrant a ‘Do Not Miss’ statement, but both of them together in one night is like a dream come true. WMNF has put together one incredible night of music. Purchase your tickets ahead of time to both save some money and to make sure you can get in. You can purchase advance tickets online at wmnf.org/events by calling the station during business hours at 813-238-8001 or in person at Skipper’s Smokehouse or other WMNF ticket outlets.
