This is Broccoli Samurai, Dear! It’s NOT Spinach! Get Your Greens!
Cleveland is coming for you. OK, maybe not ALL of Cleveland, but one very important part. With four guys. Who play jamtronic funk.
Because Broccoli Samurai have a very, very busy summer schedule, jammed with shows and festivals. The tour started last Thursday with a show in Wisconsin and two in Minnesota. They resume this Thursday (June 16) at the Blind Tiger in Greensboro and the next night at Asheville’s Salvage Station, both shows with Perpetual Groove, who nearly burned down Purple Hatter’s Ball a week ago with their scorching set.
After the North Carolina shows, they head to Florida for three dates, including Wednesday, June 21st, at Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa with another superb jamtronic band, Future Vintage. Then they head up the East Coast, including Shadefest in Avenue MD on June 24th.
Next on the schedule are four shows in Colorado, then a return to shows up and down the East Coast. They hit Floyd Fest in July, and then in August they will play The Werk Out, Wild Woods Festival, and Night Lights Music Festival (two nights inclduing a Lotus tribute). September finds them at Hometown Get Down, then Harvest Ball Fest in October, and back to Florida for Zen Awakening in November.
Broccoli Samurai are: Ryan Hodson, keyboards; Cameron Bickley, drums; Zachary Wolfe Nagi-Schehl, bass; and Michael Vincent, guitar. Since the band’s inception in 2010, they have played countless dates and festivals and performed with most of the great bands on our scene.

This was my third opportunity to hear Cleveland’s Broccoli Samurai. And the best. If you’re a jamtronic fool like me, you need these boys in your life. They opened with one of their signature tunes, “Spiritualize,” then slowed the pace — slightly — with “More than Acceptable.” During “Buddy’s Song,” guitarist Michael Vincent (so young-looking I wouldn’t serve him even if he had a legal ID) quoted “Softly As In a Morning Sunrise.” He had a brilliant set, full of jazz, funk and rock. From there, BS went deep, deep jamtronic with “Be Creative for Yourself,” with a quick “People Make the World Go ‘Round” tease from Vincent (which he used again later). This was a deluxe set.
