The Disco Biscuits Prove They Reign Supreme at The Capitol Theatre
The Disco Biscuits took over the Capitol Theatre for the second time in their 22-year existence, this time for three nights spanning April 27-29, and proved they are still one of the most exciting, unique acts in the jam scene. From Thursday night’s ease-in to Saturday night’s flawlessly executed send-off, The Disco Biscuits touched every piece of the spectrum throughout their three-night stand. There were bust-outs like “Loose Change,” which was reworked since its last time played in 2010, groovy jams to start the nights both Friday, which jammed into a beautiful “Air Song,” and Saturday’s into “Papercut.” Thursday warranted a sit-in from Matisyahu on “7/11” that included a dub jam and freestyle with the artist.
The highlights from the weekend were plentiful. Thursday started off with a bang as the band lit the crowd up with the first note as they sandwiched “Shem-Ra Boo” and “Gangster” in between fan favorite “Story of the World.” The crowd settled in as well as the band, and by the second set closing “House Dog Party Favor” and “Kitchen Mitts” encore the Capitol Theatre felt like home again. Anticipation rose, and the energy couldn’t have been higher by showtime Friday, which became one giant segue of songs, as well as the finishing section of night one’s “Shem-Ra Boo.” “Spacebirdmatingcall,” “Down to the Bottom,” “Save the Robots” and “Jigsaw Earth” consumed most of the night as the foursome flawlessly transitioned in and out of the songs throughout. The beautiful venue held the sold-out crowds with ease as the sea of concertgoers comfortably danced their asses off, turning the beautiful theatre into a full-out dance party.
Saturday approached, and, contrary to my previous belief, the energy would get even higher. After a show like Friday, it was only right that the crowd couldn’t wait to see if it could be topped. Night three brought a sense of comfort, and overall the show was fantastic. Saturday had just as many highlights as nights past, if not more, but from start to finish it had the perfect vibe and execution. The crowd erupted at set break in such fashion you would have though the show was over. After an “I-Man”-sandwiched second set, one last “Digital Buddah” brought the night – and the weekend – to a close.
A full-on victory for The Disco Biscuits, their fans, and everyone involved as the legendary four-piece exited stage left. With 22 years’ experience, there is only one way to describe The Disco Biscuits: professional. A band willing to take so many risks on stage and run so smoothly in all other aspects as a brand, a business, and a family should not be missed. With a Colorado run approaching – three nights at The Ogden and one stellar night at Red Rocks with Shpongle and Camp Bisco at Montage Mountain July 13-15 – you have no excuse.
