The New Mastersounds and Turkuaz Take Their Funk on a Crosscountry Trip
The funk is about to get deep — really deep! The New Mastersounds and Turkuaz have teamed up for a co-headlining tour with 39 dates plus 11 dates where one of the two bands performs. The boys from Leeds and the crew from The Big Apple start their massive collaboration October 6 at the Aggie Theatre in Ft. Collins CO before criss-crossing the country, finally wrapping it up at The Orange Peel In Asheville NC December 17.
The New Mastersounds — Eddie Roberts, guitar; Simon Allen, drums; Pete Shand, bass guitar; and Joe Tatton, organ and piano — have 17 albums to their credit (including several live recordings and a compilation). TheIR newest is The Nashville Session, but it’s going if not gone — a vinyl-only pressing of only 1000. Their records are all consistently remarkable in their old-school jazzy funk style while still sounding brand new. 2014’s Therapy and last year’s Made for Pleasure are great examples.
Turkuaz — Dave Brandwein, guitar/vocals; Taylor Shell, bass; Craig Brodhead, guitar/synths; Michelangelo Carubba, drums; Greg Sanderson, saxophone; Joshua Schwartz, saxophone/vocals; Chris Brouwers, trumpet/keyboard; Sammi Garett, vocals/percussion; and Shira Elias, vocals — have likewise been tearing it up everywhere they go. Their album release from last year, Digitonium, is also a funk delight, as was 2014’s Future 86. As our friend Pat says, “Friends don’t let friends miss Turkuaz!”
Turkuak posted this message on their Facebook page:
“Fall Tour 2016 with The New Mastersounds! We’re also releasing a split 7″ that will feature both bands covering and collaborating on one of each other’s song. The very limited edition vinyl is now available for pre-order via both band’s fan club ticketing before it’s exclusively available at shows throughout tour.”
