Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival Presents The Unprecedented With Chobeewowbee Village
Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival is shaping up among the most extraordinary gatherings in recent memory, matching a wide-ranging musical lineup with such truly inimitable attractions as ChobeeWowbee Village. Presented by Bay Area’s Kulturehaus, ChobeeWowbee Village will be a festival within a festival, a nexus of music and magic showcasing award-winning art and artists from across the country. Live art will be created throughout the day as ChobeeWowbee Villagers reinvigorate their mind, body, and spirit at yoga, meditation, and holistic workshops instructed by world-renowned body workers. When the sun sets, the Village promises even more unique expression, offering attendees music, dancing, and late night adventures never to be forgotten. Florida’s biggest ever camping festival, Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival happens March 3–6 just outside Florida’s magnificent Lake Okeechobee.
ChobeeWowbee Village will host a remarkable roster of contemporary artists and designers, including Bamboo DNA’s Gerard Manakawa, production designer/installation artist Hillary Andujar, interdisciplinary artist Prescott McCarthy, Sparceland Studios founder Charlie Smith, interactive muralist Shrine, stage designer/sculptor Joel Stockdill, New Media designer Julian Picaza, and the Moksha collective of artists, musicians, technicians. Among the many highlights of the ChobeeWowbee artist community will be Taylor Kuffner’s Gamelatron Project, a site-specific installation that melds the thousand-year-old sonic tradition of Indonesian Gamelan with the emerging field of robotics to create an immersive, kinetic musical sculpture. Furthermore, Miami artist Bhakti Baxter has created a series of seven illuminated, inflatable heads honoring such historically significant icons as Syd Barrett, Bessie Smith, John Coltrane, Nicola Tesla, John Cage, Max Planck, Marie Curie, Buckminster Fuller, and the one and only David Bowie. In addition to their striking artistic power, the eight-foot-high Heads will also serve a functional use, lighting paths and serving as unforgettable landmarks for festival attendees.
That would be more than enough for most festivals but Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival is anything but most festivals. In addition to its array of gifted artists, ChobeeWowbee will also host live musical performances on such distinct stages as WobeeChobee Chia Lounge and The Palace, with four-day festival residencies from British anti-folk one man band Beans On Toast and acclaimed avant garde musician/artist/filmmaker Sorne.
Recently named by the New York Times as one of the places “Where Music Lovers Should Go In 2016,” Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival boasts an extraordinary multi-genre bill, with more than 120 artists, bands, and DJs from around the globe performing across five signature stages. Headliners include Kendrick Lamar, Mumford & Sons, and Skrillex, alongside a stunning line-up that also features Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters, Fetty Wap, Bassnectar, Miguel, Odesza, Big Grams (Big Boi & Phantogram), Mac Miller, D daryl Hall & John Oates, Ween and many more. Among OMF’s surefire highlights will be ”PoWow! A Live Superstar Mashup,.” GRAMMY Award-winners Miguel and Arcade Fire’s Win Butler will share the spotlight as co-creative directors, while Rock & Roll Hall of Fame guitarist/singer/producer/songwriter John Oates will serve as the music director of this virtuoso group that will also include budding superstar Kamasi Washington, legendary pioneers of funk The Meters’ George Porter, Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, world champion DJ and scratchmaster Chris Karns and Eric Krasno & Neal Evans of Soulive. Major special guests – both announced and unannounced – will also take the stage, guaranteeing an unforgettable evening of surprises, invention and excitement.
